There are plenty of reasons for switching to CO2 neutral office water coolers, and using natural soap. starting with all of the extraneous ingredients found in commercial brands that don’t do our body good!
Parabens, for example, are used to assist in the prevention of growing microbes in cosmetic products. They can be absorbed through the skin, blood and digestive system. According to the Environmental Working Groups’s Skin Deep database, parabens are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and skin irritation.
Pthalates are used in cosmetics to keep a hold on the colour and scents that they contain. They are often found in makeup and nail polish items.Pthalates are linked to disrupting the hormonal system, and more specifically with sex hormones.
Lead, arsenic, mercury, aluminum, zinc, chromium and iron are found in all types of cosmetics. Skin Deep tells us that most heavy metals are linked to toxicity, and some are linked to cancer-causing agents.
Formaldehyde is used mostly in shampoos and liquid body soaps, which is meant to prevent bacteria from growing in water-based products. It has been linked to cancer and causing sensitivity to the skin. It has been known to create allergic skin reactions and rashes in some users.
There are plenty of soaps, though, that don’t use any of these ingredients. Here are some of our favourites:
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps are traced back to German-Jewish soapmaking tradition. Since 1929, they’ve been delivering high quality, versatile and eco-friendly products. Arguably their most popular, the Pure Castile Soaps combine organic extra virgin coconut, jojoba, hemp, and olive oils, with other pure essential oils, to create a unique soap available in both liquid and bar forms. The fair-trade soap is also completely biodegradable and vegetable-based, with no synthetic foaming agents, thickeners, or preservatives, and made with 100 percent post-consumer cylinder bottles with paper labels. We especially love their Peppermint Bar Soap, with a therapeutic peppermint oil that works as a mild stimulant to increase vitality and clarity. It is wrapped in 10% hemp-flax / 90% post-consumer recycled paper from Living Tree Paper Co.
