Frequently asked questions

Which countries get the most electricity from renewables?

9 countries and territories generated practically all of their electricity from renewables in their latest year, mostly from hydropower, including Albania, Bhutan, Central African Republic, Costa Rica, Democratic Republic of Congo. Among countries that generate more than 100 TWh a year, the highest shares are in Norway (99.0%), Brazil (86.6%), Sweden (71.2%), Canada (63.9%), Germany (59.1%).

What share of the world’s electricity is renewable?

About 33.8% in 2025. Including nuclear, 42.6% came from low-carbon sources. Coal was still the largest single source at 33.0%.

Which country has the cleanest electricity?

Among countries that generate at least 10 TWh a year, the lowest carbon intensity is in Ethiopia (23 g CO₂/kWh), Bhutan (24 g CO₂/kWh), Costa Rica (24 g CO₂/kWh). The world average is 458 g.

What is the difference between renewable and low-carbon electricity?

Renewable electricity comes from hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy and similar sources. Low-carbon electricity adds nuclear power, which is not renewable but emits very little CO₂. A country such as France has a modest renewable share and a very high low-carbon share.

About the data. Shares are percentages of the electricity generated inside the country in a year. Renewables are hydro, wind, solar, bioenergy and other renewable sources. Low-carbon adds nuclear. The latest year differs between countries and is shown on each page. Carbon intensity is an estimate of the CO₂ emitted per kilowatt-hour generated, including emissions over the life of each power source.
