Frequently asked questions
Which country emits the most CO₂?
China is the largest emitter, with 12.29 billion tonnes of CO₂ in 2024, or 31.84% of the global total. The United States is second with 4.90 billion tonnes and India third with 3.19 billion tonnes.
Which country has the highest CO₂ emissions per person?
Qatar has the highest figure at 41.27 tonnes per person, followed by Kuwait (26.25) and Brunei (26.05). The world average is 4.73 tonnes.
How much CO₂ does the world emit each year?
About 38.6 billion tonnes of CO₂ from fossil fuels and industry in 2024. That figure does not include emissions from land-use change such as deforestation.
Why do total and per-person rankings look so different?
Total emissions depend heavily on population. India is the third-largest emitter in total, but at 2.2 tonnes per person it is well below the world average. Small oil and gas producers have low totals and very high per-person figures.
About the data. Figures are annual carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels and from industry, such as cement production. They are counted where the emissions happen and do not include land-use change, other greenhouse gases, or emissions from imported goods.
