Sweden is launching standards to help consumers make conscious choices regarding the impact of their food-choice decisions. Any items with at least 25% greenhouse gas savings will be marked accordingly, beginning with plant production, dairy and fish products.

Climate expert Pernilla Tidåker stressed the importance of their initiative. “We don’t help the consumer to choose between meat and beans,” she explained. “We do help in choosing a climate friendlier alternative within every product category.”climate-label

Swedish studies have shown that consumers are interested in earth-friendly products, and 60% of consumers would prefer a label to help them find what they are looking for.

This initiative will see that standards are developed for marketing specific foods that have an average eco-impact of 25% lower than a reference product in the same category. It also will develop a monitoring system for measuring changes and differences in items.

Their aim is to cover the food chanin from farm to store shelf, including distribution and packaging.

Do you think this is a step that other countries should take?
