IKEA goes solar-powered
By Laurie Posted on April 24th, 2009 in Living Green, TechnologyIt’s been a long wait since Ikea’s claims last year of their intent to start selling solar products. They’ve finally come through with a variety of solar-powered LED lights designed for outdoor use.

The new SOLIG LED solar outdoor lights are energy saving and have the same attractive kitschy-ness of many of IKEA’s goods. Because there are many varieties – for the ground, atop a table, in trees, on the wall – there is an option for everyone with enough stylistic differences to suit each decor. IKEA ensures that thorough tests are completed to reinforce their ability to withstand rain, moisture, and the other elements.
The lights in the range – from posts (pictured) to globes to up-lights – are IKEA’s awaited move towards eco-friendly lighting.
The different designs are each equipped with a rechargeable battery that stores energy
from the sun, and come nighttime, the devices switch on. And because the lights are LEDs, they last up to four times longer than regular bulbs and use 70% less energy – so you know they’ll be reliable on the cloudiest of days.
And leave it to IKEA to keep it modest: they start at $7.99 and range up to $19.99. Explore their range on their website, Ikea.com
