There are growing issues about toxins finding their way into baby products; a recent article delivered the facts about formaldehyde and dioxane finding their way into various personal-care products, and we recently updated you on the issues with BPA and babies in our article Newborns at greater risk with BPA.

With these growing concerns, two mothers came together and developed Silikids, a kids accessory company devoting themselves to making safe items for babies and children out of silicone.

According to their website, as well as Consumer Reports, silicone is odorless, taste-free, less bacteria-attracting, and non-allergenic. And because of it’s heat-resistance, it is easy to boil and sterilize. And yes, it’s BPA-free, too.

What makes Silikids green?
We’re always on the lookout for green companies, but using safe or eco-friendlier materials doesn’t always make a company planet-friendly. Silikids goes a step further by incorporating a recycling program: if your local recycling centre doesn’t take care of silicone, you can send your Silikids items back to them and they will recycle it for you!

We also feel the need to note their perfect packaging: all items were singularly wrapped in minimal recyclable paper, snugly fit together in a small box without extra packaging.

Their recycling initiative makes them a great green company, and could only be better if they adopted the use of organic cotton for the Silipads. Regardless, we love the idea of using such a sustainable material, and the durability, bright colours, and easy-clean up make Silikids at the top of our list for (primarily) planet- and baby-friendly gear.
