You’d think that when a food company makes products that are free of the majority of top allergens, gluten-free, suitable for vegans, cholesterol free, and one of the most nutritious foods in the world is the base of all of its products, that it couldn’t possibly be, well, delicious could it?

We were skeptical (okay, maybe we weren’t), so we just had to try them, and thankfully, it far surpassed any sort of expectations we may have had. living-hemp

Living Harvest is a leading company developing organic and natural products using hemp seeds. Their line includes a variety of protein powders, oil, nuts, and milk. [read more about hemp]

Fortunately, we had the opportunity to try most of their product line, and here’s what we think:

Hemp Protein Powder, original flavour

Living Harvest’s hemp protein powder contains 13g of raw, high-quality digestible protein per serving. In addition, it also contains 9g of fibre. We compared the nutrition stats with another popular brand, which has 15g of protein but with only 5g of fibre for the same serving side. In our opinion, the 2g of protein doesn’t outweigh the fibre-filled benefits – and if you’re worried, use another half-scoop or so.

The protein powder is finely ground, and although it doesn’t readily dissolve in liquid, its far less gritty than others we have tried. It adds a pleasant nutty flavour, and you feel good about eating it because it’s only made from 100% Certified Organic hemp seeds. In a smoothie it was non-existent. And out favourite? Stirring it into some blended soups.

They also offer Chocolate Chili and Vanilla Spice varieties.

Organic Hemp Oil

Their hemp oil is a pleasant, flavourful addition to any dish. We sampled it straight, then made a meal out of it with our Warm Kale and Quinoa Salad. (P.S. We didn’t test while cooking because of it’s low-to-medium heat point. Although you can use it, it’s not recommended for high temperatures.)

We enjoyed the extra nuttiness and all agreed that it’s a great alternative to always using olive, canola, and other oils, due to it’s balanced omega 3 to 6 ratio (read more).

Hempmilk – Vanilla

It’s easy to understand why their hempmilk has made it’s way into the homes of many, and just as often, in the press. Smooth with a medium consistency  (think 1% dairy milk or light soymilk), it is creamy with a nutty aftertaste that isn’t overpowering – and an added hint of vanilla.

Drinking it straight tastes akin to melted vanilla ice cream, the nuttiness reminiscent of a true vanilla bean. And adding it to coffee was no exception: some non-dairy milks tend to separate when they hit hot liquid, but the hemp milk stayed intact with the extra vanilla flavour to make the morning brew a little brighter.

For those with dairy, soy, and almond allergies, it’s helps fit the void for a missing milk… But who are we kidding? We’d drink it anyway.

It’s also available in Original and Chocolate, and Unsweetened versions of Original and Vanilla.

Living Harvest provides quality products that makes hearts healthy and stomachs satisfied. We’ll drink to that, and sure you will, too (with their Hemp Milk, that is).
