There is still time to register for the Greener Gadgets conference on February 27th in New York. Drawing a crowd from designers to entrepreneurs, thousands will gather together to explore the future of green consumer electronics.
The program includes a variety of panelists and speakers, featuring topics such as “Measuring your Hue of Green”, “Green Design for Good”, and “Closing the Loop in Cradle to Cradle”.

Perhaps the highlight will be the design competition; the site pre-featured the top 50 entries, and the top 10 were voted for via their website. You can still explore them online, although the voting is closed.
Among the highest votes are the Lightimus, a clever green lighting device that charges and glows; the Power Hog, basically given children a lesson in energy consumption; the Recompute, an recyclable, renewable computer tower developed from cardboard; the Social-environmental Station, an eco-traffic light that also collects other information, such as air pressure and humidity; the Bware Water Meter, which (somewhat obviously) warns you of your water use; and the ubicycle Public Bicycle Service System, supplying bikes to the masses to get from A to B.
Although they were in the top ranks, all of the designs were clever. The PpMm was among the lowest, with pre-perforated paper to eliminate the use of energy-draining paper shredders for top-secret data and bills. Good idea, but with paperless bills available, hand-cranked shredders, or ripping it to shreds yourself, it seems like the production might end of costing more. The Solar Cooler was developed with malaria drugs in mind, able to maintain the shelf life of the items to work. Solar coolers are already available, but their reasoning was (seemingly) developed specifically for these drugs – perhaps, though, that is why their votes were lower.
The winner scores $3000 and bragging rights – and we’ll keep you posted.
Stay tuned after the 27th for details from the show and the winner of the competition.
