Runner-driven sneaker company New Balance (newbalance.com) is on their way to adding an eco-driven collection of shoes to its outdoor line of durable, reliable footwear.

These shoes will include environmentally-friendly materials, as well as construction and manufacturing. Dubbed the New Balance 70, its to be launched later this month.

The company claims that 75% of its components are made of sustainable materials, and other parts, including the laces and webbing, are developed from recycled polyester. Fewer solvents and other synthetics make up the remainder.
new-balanceCombined with this is the addition of  a rice husk filler in the outsole, which reduces the amount of rubber – and therefore petroleum – needed. The adhesives are water based, and no extra wrapping and stuffing is used in the packaging.

With other companies on board (check out our articles on Keds’s eco-shoes and Splaff’s recycled flip flops, we think this is another – ahem – “step” towards sustainability.
