Okay, so you really aren’t physically taking a shoe from Keds and planting a tree with it. But Keds is giving back to the environment with their new eco-line, and if you buy a pair of shoes, Keds’ll plant a tree in your honour.Remember Keds? When we were kids, we wore knock-off after knock-off of the signature canvas sneakers (we could only afford the $5 imitations). They’ve been around since 1916 and are the first athletic and lifestyle footwear brand. The classic shoes are still favourites, and were worn by our parents, their parents, athletes, fashion icons, and everyone in between.
Side note: did you know that Keds actually coined the term “sneakers”, because the rubber soles of them made them quiet?
Their designs still replicate their classic look, combining fresh new styles with ideas corresponding with the years that pass by. And with more companies going planet-friendly, Keds is hot on their tails with their new Green Label.
These eco-sneaks are made from 100% organic cotton, thereby reducing the amount of toxic pesticides that conventional cotton delivers. The shoes themselves are coloured with non-toxic inks and dyes and the soles and insoles are made from 20% recycled rubber. Even the laces are eco-friendly: their developed from 100% recycled PET (which is the stuff in water bottles), strung through nickel-free eyelets.
But that’s not all…
Keds takes it a step further: currently, they’ve partnered with Arbor Day Foundation, an organization dedicated to planting, nurturing and celebrating trees. With every pair of Green Label Keds sold in 2009, Keds’ll plant a tree. Simple as that.
