Planet-friendly post-mortality planning
By Laurie Posted on March 15th, 2009 in Featured, Living GreenGreen living is becoming the norm, with every individual grasping on some sort of version of it. But what about after the fact? You know… Green dying?
A recent article in the Times brought forth the newest in green business: funerals. Zero
toxins, plastic-free coffin, and rustic headstones, these companies offer a more natural way to nail the casket closed. Some even offer a “natural burial”, with a wicker or cardboard casket buried in a field, a sapling marking the spot.
The green funeral business, according to the Times, has expanded 25% to 30%, year on year, in the past decade and is now a £1 billion-plus sector.
“More of us, it seems, want to end our lives in the way we wished we could have lived them — by being kind to the environment. That has meant a surge in demand for the sort of funerals that until a few years ago were requested only by old hippies and eccentric Americans.” [Times]
