Green living is becoming the norm, with every  individual grasping on some sort of version of it. But what about after the fact? You know… Green dying?

A recent article in the Times brought forth the newest in green business: funerals. Zero funeral 300x201 Planet friendly post mortality planningtoxins, plastic-free coffin, and rustic headstones, these companies offer a more natural way to nail the casket closed. Some even offer a “natural burial”, with a wicker or cardboard casket buried in a field, a sapling marking the spot.

The green funeral business, according to the Times, has expanded 25% to 30%, year on year, in the past decade and is now a £1 billion-plus sector.

“More of us, it seems, want to end our lives in the way we wished we could have lived them — by being kind to the environment. That has meant a surge in demand for the sort of funerals that until a few years ago were requested only by old hippies and eccentric Americans.” [Times]
