According to ModernGhana.com, the consumption of contaminated food and water in Africa is about 700,000 per year, as disclosed by Dr. Daniel Kertesz,World Health Organization (WHO), Country Representative for Ghana.
At a recent gathering of the WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Kertesz produced the hard facts: the incidence of diarrhea in African children is up to five episodes, per child, yearly, with a mortality rate of 5.7-7.1 per 1000 in Africa, compared to the 4.1 per 1000 globally.
Alarming, no? It doesn’t end there. Kertesz also noted the numerous diseases, among them cholera and botulism, due to food contamination and chemicals.
With a goal of food safety and security in mind, they are striving to improve food control systems, both domestic and from imports.
Regardless of the mission in mind, something needs to be done.
