Project Meteotek: The camera-carrying balloon
By Laurie Posted on March 24th, 2009 in TechnologyA group of secondary school students combined a Coolpix and a helium balloon to capture amazing photographs from 20 miles above Earth’s surface.

The project was called Meteotek08, a brainchild that resulted from the students’ love of a combination for electronics, weather, and space. Their goal was to develop some sort of object that would be able to reach altitudes of over 30,000, while recording atmospheric information and capturing photographs.

The object ended up being a camera-carrying, helium-inflated balloon, developed from a special form of latex. After months of careful planning, the launch took plcae on February 28th, 09:10:20AM. It landed just over two hours later – just 38 kilometres away from their lift-off location.

The story is amazing, and we can’t do it justice. It’s available in a translatable form with photographs that surely speak for themselves.
