Prince Charles, on his 10-day tour of South America, has taken the time to warn Brazilians that failure to act in the next eight years will cause massive affects towards damage from climate change.

His plea – that we have only “100 months left” - will help put environmental issues at the top of the agenda at the upcoming meeting of G20 leaders in London.
His presentation to 200 business leaders reinforced what our priorities should be. As reported by the Telegraph, the Prince pleaded: “As the world’s economy heads further into recession, it would be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture; to commit the sin, as we say in England and if you will pardon the terrible pun, of ‘not seeing the wood for the trees’. For we are, I fear, at a defining moment in the world’s history.”
He also quoted Brazilian environmentalist Chico Mendes, the great, who once said we “fighting for humanity.”
It is rare for us to see Prince Charles as a significant advocate in environmental change, but, regardless, a refreshing new voice. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) agrees – they want to use his expertise and contacts in order to promote their interests abroad, including in the area of climate change.

Maybe not, though – it’s frightening to think about. I’m glad he’s using his power.
